WhatsApp Rolls Out Filters and Backgrounds to Enhance Video Calls
WhatsApp is introducing a new set of features aimed at making video calls more engaging and visually dynamic. The update includes customizable filters, virtual backgrounds, touch-up effects, and low light enhancements, bringing a personal and polished touch to video interactions—whether one-on-one or in groups.
While features like these are already familiar to users of Zoom or Instagram (also owned by Meta), WhatsApp is tailoring them to its socially-focused user base. The move allows users to enjoy more expressive and immersive video chats without needing to worry about tidying up or finding the perfect setting.
Custom Filters and Backgrounds
Users can now choose from 10 background options such as Blur, Office, Living Room, Café, Beach, Sunset, Forest, Celebration, Foodie, and the playful Smoosh. These help mask clutter and instantly transform surroundings.
The update also includes 10 video filters—like Warm, Cool, Black & White, Vintage TV, and Fisheye—offering users a way to change the look and feel of their video feed with a single tap.
Touch-Up and Low Light Features
To further improve call quality and user confidence, WhatsApp has added Touch Up, which smooths facial features, and Low Light, which brightens dim environments—ensuring users look their best even in less-than-ideal lighting.
Easy to Access, Rolling Out Soon
These features are accessible via a new effects icon that appears during video calls. Users can simply tap the icon to browse and apply filters or backgrounds in real time.
WhatsApp has confirmed that the update will be rolling out to all users globally over the coming weeks, enhancing video calling just in time for everyday chats and special moments alike.
